The Elliott Room

St Margaret's Parish Church Scotswood

A COMMUNITY ROOM FOR SCOTSWOOD  The Elliott Room is St Margaret's community room.  As much of Scotswood is now demolished, it is vital that local people still have somewhere within Scotswood to gather together for meetings or celebrations.

A ROOM FOR GENERAL HIRE  The Elliott Room is also available to hire by groups of up to 30 from elsewhere who are looking for attractive facilities that are entirely disability friendly, very reasonably priced and come with an optional catering package via the 'timeout cafe'.  See the 'timeout cafe' page for more details.

St Margaret's Parish Church ScotswoodA ROOM IN WHICH TO REMEMBER  The main feature of the Elliott Room is the very striking stained glass window dedicated to John Armstrong Elliott.  Before the church conversion in the year 2000, this used to be directly above the main altar.

The Elliott Room is also the home of the photographic display of the Montagu Pit Disaster that took place just below the site of the church in 1925 and that cost the lives of almost 40 miners.  Outside, within the grounds of the church, a Memorial Garden has been built as a permanent memorial to those who died in the Disaster, thanks to the generosity of SITA who awarded St Margaret's a generous grant towards the work.  The main feature of the Garden is a pit wheel, created using imaginative brickwork.  The Garden is open Monday by private appointment with the Vicar.
